"Farewell" is a powerful pop ballad. The song opens with a somber piano intro and soft vocal. When the pre-chorus arrives, so do the drums, cello, and bass, until a rising two-octave scale on the piano delivers us into the first chorus. The words are honest and determined - "I've got a carpet to stitch because your bitterness tore it out from under my feet." In the second verse, a clarinet and flute chime in. The second pre-chorus kicks in strong with added pizzicato strings, and we arrive in the second chorus through another building piano scale. We're lead into the bridge after a short musical break wherein the piano and violin are the driving instruments, embellished by flute, clarinet, and carried by the bass. The bridge is a symphony in both emotions and arrangement. "The room we once laughed in is littered with rage and sin." When the bridge comes to a close, the song is concluded with a final, piano/vocal chorus, and a soft, pensive piano outro.
lyrics
LYRICS:
In my darkest time, you took me in right when I needed it, but I regret all of my weaknesses. Because all that kept me alive was overturned into your palm. It was under the guise you'd steer me to a life of song...
(chorus)
I've got a carpet to stitch because your bitterness tore it out from under my feet. I've got a needle and thread. I won't stop 'til I'm dead. I'll sew it back, nice and neat. I could scream, I could yell, but there's nothing left to say but farewell.
It must be simpler to scorn a woman for seeking success on her own than give her praise for being brave enough. Oh, every single breath of every day's become a battle - a never ending quest for finding worth in anything at all...
(chorus)
The room we once laughed in is littered with rage and sin. And after you broke my trust, I decided to let those old scraps rust. And now it's my things too. I hope I never have to look into your stubborn eyes and pretend to smile, it'd be all lies.
(chorus)
